Norb Vonnegut returns to Newman Communications for his third novel, THE TRUST (Minotaur Books, July 2012). Having worked with Vonnegut for book publicity and promotion on THE GODS OF GREENWICH , Newman Communications is pleased to have him back with his much anticipated newest release.

Every one of Vonnegut’s novels has a big idea grounded in reality. THE TRUST shows how some financial criminals hide behind the First Amendment–specifically freedom of religion. The idea for the story traces back to an incident when Pablo Escobar’s first cousin tried to open an account with Vonnegut’s PWM team at Morgan Stanley.

Having worked on Wall Street for twenty years, Vonnegut (cousin of the late Kurt) is more than qualified to tell the tale. He combines his wealth management expertise and intuitive, darkly humorous writing into a fast-talking, suspense thriller that burrows inside the world of big-money philanthropy.

The book publicity and reviews are piling in and the consensus is unanimous; Vonnegut has a winner in THE TRUST:

The New York Times says THE TRUST is “money-porn beach reading.”

“Norb Vonnegut is the seriously underappreciated author of three glittery thrillers about fiscal malfeasance. This may not sound like a red-hot franchise, but he has made it one. With “Top Producer” (2009), “The Gods of Greenwich” (2011) and now “The Trust,” he is three for three in his own improbably sexy genre.

“Mr. Vonnegut dreams up diabolically elegant business crimes, then sends smart-talking characters to follow the money. He draws upon his own Wall Street experience (with Morgan Stanley, among other employers) to provide the sound of insider acumen. “I’ve had 14 managers over the last 10 years,” Grove O’Rourke says at the start of the new book. Grove was the stockbroker hero of “Top Producer,” and now he’s back for an encore.”

Associated Press writes: “Vonnegut turns out crisp prose and delightful conversations that move the reader from one exciting event to another.” (July 16, 2012)

Publisher’s Weekly: “Drawing on his own years on Wall Street, Vonnegut (Kurt’s fourth cousin) bolsters this efficient thriller with credible financial and legal detail while offering in Biscuit a colorful foil to his rather stolid hero”

Forbes.com shares Vonnegut’s journey from Wall Street to writer.

Kirkus Reviews: “Mommas, don’t let your sons grow up to be Manhattan brokers or board members of charitable foundations. They’d never survive the combination of criminal plots and personal threats… A fast and furious novel from Vonnegut and a guaranteed good time.”

Vonnegut will hold book signings and events in New York City, Rhode Island (his current home town), Connecticut, and in North Carolina where part of The Trust takes place and in Charleston, South Carolina, Vonnegut’s childhood home and the setting for much of The Trust.

About the Book:

Over the past few decades, globalization and Googlization have kicked off the first phase of an innovation revolution more profound and more powerful than any economic force since the arrival of Europeans on North American shores half a millennium ago. These developments have brought us such advances as the Web, social networking, 24/7 connectivity, and global markets.

But the benefits of all this progress have not been shared fairly among all. It is true that the elites of Mumbai are closer today to the elites of Manhattan than they were two decades ago, but what about Kansas? The hard-working salarymen of the developed world are not getting wealthier, but the economic elites who have mastered the new rules of global innovation are. Even as rural women in Africa and Asia have seen their lives transformed by mobile phones and the Internet, the middle classes and blue-collar workers in prosperous countries everywhere have been squeezed by the new global realities. And as the first phase of the innovation revolution gives way to a much greater transformation, America and other rich societies must find a path to inclusive growth or else risk being left behind by history.

All this leads to the central political and economic question of our age: How can the extraordinary benefits of the innovation revolution be shared more equitably among all of society? Need, Speed, and Greed answers that question, offering the essential insider’s guide to this new world of innovation. Drawing on the best of the academic and field work in this emerging area, Vaitheeswaran inspires and empowers readers to improve their lives, their work, and perhaps even the world.

Book Publicity for Never Apply for a Job Again Teaches Networking Skills for Career Management

Newman Communications has teamed up with career expert Darrell W. Gurney to build a book publicity and promotion campaign for his new book, Never Apply for a Job Again! Break the Rules, Cut the Line, Beat the Rest (Career Press, February 2012).

In his book, Gurney shares the “stealth” networking skills he’s taught for 25 years as a renowned career consultant. Drawing on basic principles of human psychology, Never Apply for a Job Again shows you how to open doors to influential players in your fields of interest to gain top-of-mind awareness and top-drawer connectedness. Through 10 simple and easy-to-follow principles, Gurney teaches you how to create powerful relationships with anyone, anywhere, for lifetime career management as both an employee or entrepreneur.

Never Apply for a Job Again shows how old-fashioned yet innovative networking wins hearts, minds, and opportunities for the savvy job seeker or career expansionist. When one becomes “question-able” in an area of passionate interest, and follows certain stealth rules of networking engagement, the personal relations developed can effect entire career changes. Gurney reminds us that:

An ounce of research is worth a pound of job search

You can never have too much information, and the higher the altitude the better

If you treat someone like an expert, they will open their door

Being interested rather than interesting wins friends and influences people

Face to face trumps online connections anytime

You build “relationship equity” one meeting at a time

Being top-of-mind, you’re always easy to find

Once you recognize and reach out to effectively design your networks, Gurney writes, “your ‘security’ will no longer be dependent on any particular employer, recruiter, or even field, but will be placed firmly into your own hands”.

About the Author:

Darrell Gurney is the founder of CareerGuy.com. For 25 years, he has consulted for the world’s top outplacement consulting firms. His first book, Headhunters Revealed! Career Secrets for Choosing and Using Professional Recruiters, was reviewed in Publishers Weekly and won the Clarion Award for Best Book from the Association for Women in Communications. Gurney has been featured on the TheLadders.com, Wall Street Journal’s CareerJournal.com, BusinessWeek Online, MSN Careers, CareerBuilder.com, and on Wall Street Journal Radio.
Authors: Peter Tanous and Jeff Cox
Publisher: Wiley

Financial analyst, Peter Tanous, and CNBC journalist, Jeff Cox, hired Newman Communications for a book publicity tour to promote their new book, Debt, Deficits, and the Demise of the American Economy. As the events of the global economic crisis continue to unfold, Newman Communications helped Tanous and Cox act as a timely resource, able to discuss the ongoing troubling financial events. To date, Newman Communications has scheduled the authors with more than 50 media interviews. A sample of these hits include an article on AOL DailyFinance discussing how investors can prepare for a double-dip recession and another including Peter Tanous on Yahoo! Finance’s “The Daily Ticker,” discussing the dire outlook of inflation.

Book Description:

In Debt, Deficits, and the Demise of the American Economy, Tanous and Cox discuss how the US is heading toward an unavoidable financial catastrophe that will paralyze the markets and the overall economy.

A timely must-read for all, the authors look at how the US landed in this black hole, how the crisis will continue to unfold, and how it will end with a stock market crash in 2012, if not sooner. Although Tanous and Cox do not predict the exact time, they do spell out the linear direction of this predictable crisis and provide the resources readers need to counter the effects of higher inflation.

About the Authors:

Peter Tanous is President of Lepercq Lynx Advisory of Washington, D.C., an SEC-registered investment advisory consulting firm. A graduate of Georgetown University, he serves on the university’s investment committee. Tanous’ book, Investment Gurus, published by Prentice Hall in 1997, received wide critical acclaim in financial circles and was chosen as a main selection of The Money Book Club. Other books include The Wealth Equation (Prentice Hall Press, 1999), Investment Visionaries (Penguin Group, 2003), and Kiplinger’s Build a Winning Portfolio (Kaplan Publishing, 2008). He co-authored (with Dr. Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore) The End of Prosperity, published by Simon & Schuster in October 2008. Peter Tanous serves on several corporate and nonprofit boards of directors. He lives in Washington D.C. with his wife, Ann.

Jeff Cox has been a journalist since 1987 and currently covers the markets and economy for CNBC.com and appears on CNBC broadcast. He also provides guest commentary for radio stations across the country, and his work has appeared in numerous publications and Web sites including TheStreet.com, Yahoo Finance, and USA Today. Prior to coming to CNBC he worked at CNNMoney and before that as a senior editor and columnist for Pennsylvania newspapers. His work has been honored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and New Jersey Press Association, and he has been a speaker at Columbia University’s journalism program. A Pennsylvania native, he is a graduate of Bloomsburg University and lives in Lower Mount Bethel, along the Delaware River, with his wife, Mary Ellen.

Norb Vonnegut, the best-selling author of Top Producer, returns to the high stakes world of Wall Street in The Gods of Greenwich. Hired to provide a full book publicity tour for The Gods of Greenwich, Newman guided Vonnegut through a book publicity campaign from galley stage to finished books. With an impressive financial background, author Norb Vonnegut used his experience on Wall Street to offer a (fictional) peek into the lives of America’s most powerful people. Newman’s book publicity campaign helped orchestrate a successful book launch party in NYC, two New York Times articles, a series of book signings, amongst other fantastic interviews.

Norb is working on a follow up to Gods of Greenwich, set to be finished this summer.

Norb’s recent media successes:

New York Times book critic Janet Maslin dubbed the The Gods of Greenwich one of the summer’s ‘books to bury yourself in‘.

Author: Michael Lewis
Publisher: W.W. Norton & Company

The Big Short - Inside the Doomsday Machine

Michael Lewis, the bestselling chronicler of Wall Street’s excesses, returns to the world’s turbulent financial markets with his newest book. Lewis comes to Newman Communications for a book publicity tour that had him winning over radio audiences nationwide. Lewis was interviewed on three separate occasions on the Westwood One Radio Network and twice for the Fox Radio Network. Newman’s publicity campaign also included WOR – AM in NY, WCBS /NY and the Wall Street Journal Radio Network. Stations throughout the country also had a chance to talk to the author whose last book was made into the movie The Blind Side and which the Academy Awards gave top honors this year to actress Sandra Bullock.

About the Book:

The Big Short is an illuminating and often frightening tale of the current global financial catastrophe from an unusual perspective: that of the winners. It follows the very small but very intelligent set of contrarian misfits brave enough to stand apart from the madding crowd, those skeptical enough to not be fooled by soaring house prices, and smart enough to recognize how criminal mismanagement, predatory lending and the chronic mispricing of complex financial derivatives would bring the whole edifice crumbling down, sooner rather than later. And because they were also willing to bet money on the boom going bust, these misfits made enormous profits even as the world’s financial markets shattered.

THE BIG SHORT delivers a dark portrait of modern American finance and its impact on the world, as well as a character-rich tale of hubris, nemesis and Wall Street greed.

About the Author

Michael Lewis is the author of Liar’s Poker, The New New Thing, Moneyball, The Blind Side, and Home Game, among other works. He lives in Berkeley, California.

Bogle

John C. Bogle, founder and retired CEO of the The Vanguard Group, knows investing. But when it comes to book publicity and promotion, he turned to the experts at Newman Communications. We are thrilled to be able to work with Mr. Bogle on his latest book publicity project promoting Common Sense on Mutual Funds: Fully Updated 10th Anniversary Edition.

How many Wall Street legends go back to their bestselling book 10 years later and honestly annotate where they were right, where they were wrong, where we are now, and where we are going? This scorecard is truly unique.

It has been a decade since Bogle’s COMMON SENSE ON MUTUAL FUNDS was first published. His bestseller examined the fundamentals of mutual fund investing in turbulent market environments and offered valuable guidance for building investment portfolios.

Since the first edition was published in 1999, much has changed—and changed radically—in the financial landscape, and no one is more aware of this than mutual fund pioneer John C. Bogle. After decades of unprecedented growth in the U.S. stock market, over the past 10 years we’ve experienced major bear markets, and most significantly, the economic crisis of 2007-2009, which wreaked havoc on the economy at large. But despite significant turmoil, the investment principles Bogle wrote about in 1999 have stood the test of time.

“With the passage of a decade, 2009 seemed a natural time not only to bring out this updated edition of Common Sense on Mutual Funds, but to evaluate its message,” writes Bogle in the new preface to the book. “In doing so, I have not altered a single word of the original edition, but have chosen instead to update its voluminous data, and to comment on significant developments that have occurred since then.”

Newman Communications is playing a leading role and fulfilling the book publicity needs for Mr. Bogle, securing coverage at major radio and TV stations, as well as print and online placement. Though the campaign is still in it’s early development, we are already enjoying much success with hits at major national radio stations and TV networks, including:

NPR-affiliated, On the Money broadcasted – WVXU-AM in Cincinnati

CBS Radio Network

Your Bottom Line on CNN-TV

In this startlingly frank account of Buffett’s life, Author, Alice Schroeder, a former managing director at Morgan Stanley—and hand picked by Buffett to be his biographer—strips away the mystery that has long cloaked the word’s richest man to reveal a life and fortune erected around lucid and inspired business vision and unimaginable personal complexity. In a book that is dominated by unstinting descriptions of Buffett’s appetites—for profit, women (particularly nurturing maternal types), food (Buffett maintained his and his family’s weight by “dangling money”)—it is refreshing that Schroeder keeps her tone free of judgment or awe; Buffett’s plain-speaking suffuses the book and renders his public and private successes and failures wonderfully human and universal. Schroeder’s sections detailing the genesis of Buffett’s investment strategy, his early mentoring by Benjamin Graham (who imparted the memorable “cigar butt” scheme: purchasing discarded stocks and taking a final puff). Inspiring managerial advice abounds and competes with gossipy tidbits (the married Buffett’s very public relationship with Washington Post editor Katherine Graham) in this rich, surprisingly affecting biography

A real-life thriller about the most tumultuous period in America’s financial history by an acclaimed New York Times Reporter

Andrew Ross Sorkin delivers the first true behind-the-scenes, moment-by-moment account of how the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression developed into a global tsunami. From inside the corner office at Lehman Brothers to secret meetings in South Korea, and the corridors of Washington, Too Big to Fail is the definitive story of the most powerful men and women in finance and politics grappling with success and failure, ego and greed, and, ultimately, the fate of the world’s economy.

“We’ve got to get some foam down on the runway!” a sleepless Timothy Geithner, the then-president of the Federal Reserve of New York, would tell Henry M. Paulson, the Treasury secretary, about the catastrophic crash the world’s financial system would experience.

Through unprecedented access to the players involved, Too Big to Fail re-creates all the drama and turmoil, revealing neverdisclosed details and elucidating how decisions made on Wall Street over the past decade sowed the seeds of the debacle. This true story is not just a look at banks that were “too big to fail,” it is a real-life thriller with a cast of bold-faced names who themselves thought they were too big to fail.
